New Year, New Goals: How to Launch Your Career in School-Based Healthcare
2025 promises to be an exciting year, as you transition from being a student to becoming a school-based healthcare professional.
Learning never stops, of course. Throughout your career, you will continue to improve your skillset and experience, and grow in your field. But right now, you’re on the verge of a new horizon. How do you best embrace it?
Take courses in addition to healthcare.
Become more well-rounded and open to more possibilities by taking a course or two outside of healthcare – and see how you might apply what you learn to your desired field. For example, fitness and physical education options can help you explore therapy or sports medicine avenues. Plus, potential employers seek out employees with more varied knowledge and experience.
Get involved in some extracurriculars.
Continue on that course by extending your academic experience beyond the classroom. Join and actively participate in campus clubs, organizations and teams. These are great ways to build leadership, collaboration, and valuable team building skills.
Keep up with industry developments.
Be on the lookout for events, newsletters, apps, and the healthcare sections of newspapers for news on the latest changes and trends in healthcare. Follow social and traditional media, and always keep reading and engaging in relevant conversations.
Never stop networking.
On and offline, continue to build your professional network throughout the course of your career.
• Start with alumni. Visit your campus career center, as well as using your face-to-face and social connections. This can be very powerful, as you have a built-in connection with professionals who graduated from your school. Seek out internships and set up informational interviews, or arrange to meet at a school-related social event.
Don’t forget to join a professional organization.
There are numerous healthcare organizations you can join, depending on the field and specialty you decide to pursue. As part of your networking and ongoing professional growth strategy, make sure you become part of at least one. Two name just two: the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the National Association of School Nurses (NASN). The sooner you get involved, the better.
